Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Canada on 11 and 12 December 2026, according to a notice issued by the Indian High Commission in Ottawa. The announcement followed a phone call between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which both leaders expressed a shared intent to strengthen ties between the two countries.
India's diplomatic mission in Ottawa confirmed the visit through its official social media account, stating that the two prime ministers had spoken and expressed a shared intent to deepen cooperation across trade, energy, technology, security, and people-to-people ties. Modi described the exchange as constructive and underlined the value he places on the bilateral strategic relationship.
Writing on X, Modi described his conversation with Carney as cordial and constructive. Both leaders indicated they would pursue further development of India-Canada relations, with Modi noting that the two countries were contributing to global stability and prosperity.
A readout from the Canadian Prime Minister's Office stated that the pair had reaffirmed their intention to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement as soon as practicable, an outcome tied to a shared goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
A trade mission to India led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu received positive acknowledgement, as did a separate visit to New Delhi by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, whose trip was aimed at advancing goals the two countries hold in common.
Conversations between the two leaders covered how shifting geopolitical conditions are affecting stability across the Indo-Pacific, along with the value of reliable partnerships in the energy and agriculture sectors. Carney also conveyed gratitude to Modi for his involvement in efforts aimed at bringing the Ukraine conflict toward a negotiated resolution, though the extent and nature of that involvement were characterised as open to interpretation rather than settled assessment.
Both leaders committed to keeping communication lines open in the period before Modi's scheduled visit to Canada.
Prior to those engagements, Anand met with Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, where the two sides explored ways to deepen cooperation spanning trade, investment, security, energy, technology, and people-to-people ties. In a post on X following her talks with Modi, Anand wrote that the two countries hold substantial room to build a shared path toward greater prosperity.
Anand stated that her talks with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi had covered the bilateral relationship, along with avenues for expanding trade, investment, and security cooperation. A separate meeting between Modi and Anand in October 2026 had similarly ranged across trade, technology, security, energy, education, and people-to-people ties, with Modi characterising those exchanges as having gone well.
India put forward a pledge to nurture a forward-moving partnership between the two nations, oriented toward concrete gains for their respective populations.
