Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anand arrived in India on Tuesday, according to a Global Affairs Canada statement, with her travel schedule carrying her onward to the United Arab Emirates between October 13 and 16 for talks aimed at strengthening ties and expanding areas of cooperation with both nations.
A meeting between Anand and External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is scheduled to advance shared agenda items drawn from the bilateral roadmap, among them trade ties, energy, people-to-people exchanges, and cooperation on security and defence. The two ministers are scheduled to hold their eleventh face-to-face encounter since last September.
Anand is also set to participate in a panel discussion on middle powers and the shifting global order at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi. A released statement noted that she would advocate for multilateral and plurilateral cooperation as a priority, given the current geopolitical landscape.
In a post on X, Anand outlined plans to visit India and the United Arab Emirates, describing both nations as partners whose ties with Canada she intends to deepen through expanded trade, greater investment flows, and closer cooperation on security matters.
India's foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted in a post on X that Anand's arrival marked her third trip to the country since June 2025. A photograph included in the same post showed Kakanur Nagaraj Naidu, additional secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs, greeting her upon arrival. The post described the visit as part of an ongoing pattern of high-level contact between the two countries.
Her UAE stop is scheduled to include talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, alongside senior officials and business figures, covering areas that span commercial partnerships, defence and security cooperation, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
A readout from the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that he held a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Both sides pledged to conclude talks on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement as soon as practicable, backing a push to see two-way trade volumes reach double their current level before 2030.
Both parties acknowledged a Team Canada Trade Mission underway in India, led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, and exchanged views on how geopolitical instability across the Indo-Pacific region is shaping conditions on the ground. Both sides committed to maintaining regular communication ahead of Modi's planned December trip to Canada. In a post on X, Modi described the exchange with Carney as both cordial and productive.
