The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has announced a two-day visit to Canada by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, scheduled for 11 and 12 December. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the timing of the visit while speaking with diners at a Calgary restaurant on Thursday morning.
Carney noted that a conversation with Modi had already taken place, with Toronto and Ottawa identified as locations for the visit, and that there was potential for the itinerary to expand further. A Thursday post on the Indian High Commission's social media channels confirmed that Modi would travel to Canada on 11 and 12 December, also noting that a recent exchange between the two leaders had taken place.
A joint statement indicated that Carney and Modi had reached an understanding to advance their bilateral relationship across trade, energy, technology, security, and people-to-people exchanges, with both parties identifying tangible outcomes as the shared goal. Speaking on Tuesday, Modi described the exchange with his Canadian counterpart as cordial and constructive, with the two leaders expressing a shared intent to sustain the forward trajectory their relationship had recently taken.
In a post on X, Modi described the two nations as jointly working toward a more stable and prosperous world, and noted that his exchange with Prime Minister Mark Carney had been both cordial and productive. The statement conveyed that both sides had reached an understanding to build on recent developments in the bilateral relationship and pursue tangible results across priority pillars of the Strategic Partnership, among them trade, energy, technology, security, and people-to-people connections.
Carney's office noted in a written statement that both leaders pledged to advance talks toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement as quickly as circumstances allow, with the broader aim of doubling bilateral trade flows by 2030. Carney told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that trade talks between Canada and India were advancing, with both sides working toward concluding an agreement before the G20 summit scheduled for mid-December.
Citing Indian envoy Dinesh Patnaik, a broadcast outlet reported that Modi is anticipated to sign a finalised trade agreement. According to the same report, Modi had given Carney assurances that he would work toward concluding negotiations before the G20 summit. World leaders are scheduled to gather at Trump National Doral in Miami on 14 and 15 December for the summit, with Donald Trump serving as host in his capacity as president.
Formal trade negotiations between Canada and India got under way in March, with both governments pledging to conclude the process before the close of 2026.
Efforts to restore ties between India and Canada are unfolding against the backdrop of a rupture that deepened after Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh community figure based in British Columbia, was fatally shot there in 2023. Justin Trudeau, who was then serving as prime minister, told reporters that information pointing to involvement by operatives of the Indian government in Nijjar's death had been assessed as credible. Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators disclosed that material gathered by the force pointed to operatives connected to the Indian government as being behind killings and other acts of violence carried out on Canadian soil.
Carney has taken steps to restore those relationships. His trip to India earlier in the year marked the first bilateral visit by a Canadian prime minister to that country since 2018.
