Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters after the team's 26-3 defeat of Tennessee on Sunday that wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. had been acquired from Arizona, punctuating the announcement with a brief "See ya!" Multiple reports placed the deal's terms at a 2027 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick heading to the Cardinals in exchange for the former fourth-overall draft selection and a 2027 seventh-round pick returning to Houston.
Relationships played a notable role in placing the Texans among the teams most actively discussed during the trade period. Harrison and quarterback C.J. Stroud had played together during their college days, a shared history that brought them back onto the same roster.
The two spent two seasons together at Ohio State. Targeting Stroud on 88 occasions throughout their final college season, Harrison accumulated more than 1,400 receiving yards along with 17 touchdown receptions, production that contributed to the team's College Football Playoff run. All-American recognition came his way in both 2023 and 2024, a stretch during which he ranked among the more frequently used options in Stroud's passing game.
Stroud has posted quiet production this season even as the team around him has managed only a single victory across its opening five contests. Trade speculation around Harrison developed heading into 2026, driven by two consecutive seasons in which his output had been slow to build.
Across four outings this season, Harrison caught five of the 12 passes thrown his way for 85 yards and one touchdown, yet he ranked as only the fifth-most frequently targeted receiver in Arizona's passing attack. Among the four teammates who each drew more targets — tight end Trey McBride, wide receivers Michael Wilson and Kendrick Bourne, and running back Jeremiyah Love — Harrison sat tied at sixth place in catches on the roster.
Across 33 appearances in a Cardinals uniform, Harrison compiled 1,578 receiving yards and scored 13 touchdowns, having earned All-American distinction on two separate occasions. Over two playing seasons, the 1,000-yard threshold went uncleared, and a string of physical setbacks compounded the picture. In the previous campaign, Harrison recorded 41 receptions across 12 appearances, totalling 608 yards and four touchdowns.
Houston's aerial attack currently holds a ranking of sixth among all NFL teams. Nico Collins anchors the receiving corps, while second-year receiver Jaylin Noel has drawn notice within the group. Collins leads the unit in targets and receptions, with 18 looks from the quarterback producing 14 catches, 193 yards, and three scoring grabs. Noel has eight receptions for 186 total yards, averaging more than 24 yards per catch.
Taken in the 2024 draft, Harrison carries a salary obligation of $4 million for the current season and $5.62 million for the one that follows, with a fifth-year option to be considered during the approaching offseason. The deal finalised between the two teams keeps him under contract in Houston through the end of the 2028 season. Because the $22.5 million signing bonus owed to Harrison had already been disbursed by the Cardinals, any franchise taking on his contract faced fresh negotiations over the deal's financial structure.
Houston's next matchup, against Jacksonville, is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. kickoff the following Sunday.
