L Murugan has stepped away from two ministerial posts — Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs — as well as his Rajya Sabha seat, citing a focus on ground-level party work in Tamil Nadu, with the BJP's position in that state ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections as his stated priority. Murugan submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, requesting to be released from his ministerial duties so he could concentrate on expanding the party's presence across the state.
In a post on X, Murugan outlined his intention to step away from his current role and devote his full attention to party-building efforts in Tamil Nadu, stating that he aimed to reconnect with grassroots workers — referred to as karyakartas — and channel his efforts toward preparing the BJP's organisational base in the state for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Talk of a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle has been circulating, and the move fits within that broader political backdrop. Two Union Ministers — George Kurian in June and Ravneet Singh Bittu in July — had already vacated their Cabinet posts before this latest departure. Departures by three officials have fed into wider conjecture that a Cabinet reorganisation may be forthcoming, though no formal announcement has come from the government.
Murugan's move draws attention to how the BJP is working to build its ground-level presence in Tamil Nadu, with party organisers treating the state as a priority zone before the next national vote. Having previously led the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, Murugan secured a Rajya Sabha seat through Madhya Pradesh. A seat in the Upper House that carried a mandate through 2030 will be vacated by him ahead of that deadline, following his personal decision to leave the post early.
Raised in Namakkal district by parents whose mother tongue was Telugu, Murugan traces his roots to the Arunthathiyar community. Reports from a named broadcaster indicate that he grew up in a low-income household and has publicly addressed the economic circumstances of his early life on multiple occasions.
In a letter addressed to Modi, Murugan noted his appreciation for the opportunity to hold a position within the Union Government, adding that he had not grown up within a family tied to politics. His parents earned their living as daily wage labourers and cattle grazers and have maintained a modest way of life in Konur village. In his written account, he noted that his parents had never anticipated their son would one day hold a position within the Union Government.
His entry into political life traces back to his time as a student, when he took up an active role within the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He took charge of the BJP's Tamil Nadu branch in 2020, and a place in Modi's Cabinet followed when the July 2021 reshuffle brought new appointments across the ministry. Following that development, Annamalai was appointed to lead the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit.
Murugan put forward his candidacy in the Nilgiris seat of Tamil Nadu during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, where A Raja of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured the win over him. His electoral loss did not prevent him from taking up a place in the Council of Ministers under the National Democratic Alliance government.
In his letter, Murugan pointed to Modi's commitment to India, Tamil Nadu, and the BJP as a motivating force behind his own work. He drew attention to central government backing for several infrastructure initiatives in Tamil Nadu — among them the Chennai Metro, port expansion at Tuticorin, and road network development — before adding, in his own words, that the party had given him the chance to stand in both Assembly and Lok Sabha contests across various election cycles. Murugan wrote that the range of opportunities extended to him for serving his nation and party had exceeded anything he had anticipated.
