Union Minister L. Murugan Resigns from Cabinet Post and Rajya Sabha Membership

Union Minister of State L. Murugan has resigned from his ministerial role and Rajya Sabha membership, informing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his decision to dedicate himself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Murugan held portfolios in Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting, and was first inducted into the Union Cabinet in July 2021.

Stepping away from both his cabinet post and his Rajya Sabha seat, L. Murugan indicated that he intends to channel his efforts toward building up the BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu on a full-time basis. A formal resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been submitted by him, with the accompanying note indicating a desire to step back into ground-level party organising ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha contest. Two ministerial briefs — one covering Parliamentary Affairs and the other spanning Information and Broadcasting — were assigned to Murugan at the Minister of State level. His entry into the Union Council of Ministers came on 7 July 2021, when he took up the portfolio covering Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying as a Minister of State, a position he held through to 2024. His return to the Rajya Sabha — this time representing Madhya Pradesh for a consecutive mandate — came through the 2024 electoral process.
