Equities trading in India wrapped up Tuesday, 13 October 2026, with broad gains across the market. The BSE Sensex closed at 73,033.78 after a 1,107-point advance of 1.54%, while the NSE Nifty 50 added 1.60% to finish at 22,721.95.
Technology shares led the advance, with upbeat earnings news and a broader lift in investor confidence adding momentum to the session's gains. Shares of HCL Technologies and TCS climbed, placing both firms among the day's notable advancers.
Gains spread across the bulk of industry groupings, with mid-cap equities joining the upward move. Trading-floor observers noted a lift in investor mood as the session drew to a close.
Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, founder and chief executive of HST Wealth, attributed the market advance to a combination of earnings-driven appetite for technology stocks, a softening in US Treasury yields, and a lift in domestic investor mood that collectively outpaced anxieties around elevated crude oil prices. Radhakrishnan further noted that IT counters paced the broader rally after HCLTech's quarterly numbers, alongside stronger AI-linked revenue streams and a healthy pipeline of deal wins, gave the sector's earnings trajectory a firmer footing.
Gains posted by TCS, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra lifted the information technology segment ahead of every other sector on the index. Sectors including consumer durables, media, and fast-moving consumer goods also recorded positive movement, though participation across the broader market stayed uneven.
Radhakrishnan noted that the headline indices — Nifty and Sensex — outpaced Bank Nifty, while stocks outside the main benchmarks trailed behind, a pattern pointing to gains concentrated in large-cap technology and other index-heavy counters rather than a rally distributed across the wider market.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indicated that stakeholder views on scrapping the long-term capital gains tax would be taken into account during Budget consultations, adding that the ongoing exchange of opinions around the securities transaction tax represented a productive form of debate. No pledge to abolish either levy was put forward by her.
Confidence in stock exchanges and other capital-market businesses picked up in the wake of those comments. Brent crude held around $106 per barrel, while a retreat in the US 10-year Treasury yield to just below 5.2% offered some relief to equity valuations.
Gains driven by corporate earnings and position-unwinding pushed the Nifty to a notably higher close, even as oil-price levels kept inflation pressures in the background.
Ponmudi, chief executive of Enrich Money, noted that afternoon trading sentiment drew a lift from the Finance Minister's remarks indicating the government would give careful thought to calls for scrapping the long-term capital gains tax. Those remarks came on the heels of pressure from industry analysts who had been pushing for the levy's abolition as a way to draw overseas investment back into the market.
Ponmudi added that the rupee's recovery — supported in part by steps taken to manage dollar demand — along with a retreat in crude oil prices had together created a more stable backdrop, with a firmer exchange rate and lower energy costs pointing toward relief on the import bill and a steadier footing for the broader economy. He noted that his comments fell short of signalling any formal policy change on the tax, even as some in the market interpreted them as pointing toward a possible review.
Elevated crude oil valuations, mounting inflationary pressures, and unresolved tensions across global geopolitics each carry the potential to shape how trading activity unfolds in the period ahead. Market participants are expected to draw their next cues from quarterly earnings releases and shifts in the broader global economic picture.
