Gains of more than 1.5% lifted benchmark indices by Tuesday's close, driven by a technology-sector advance that spread buying activity into banking, financial services, auto, and realty counters across Indian equity markets. Benchmark indices on both exchanges wrapped up the session with broad-based gains, the BSE Sensex adding 1,109.10 points — a rise of 1.54% — to finish at 73,033.78, while the NSE Nifty climbed 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to land at 22,721.95.
Intraday trading pushed the Sensex to a peak of 73,045.67, with the Nifty reaching an upper bound of 22,721.95 during the same session. Among the session's sector moves, the Nifty IT index posted a 5.22% advance, closing at 29,830.10.
Two Sensex-listed technology firms posted notable gains, with HCL Technologies advancing 8.28% and Tata Consultancy Services recording a rise of 6.59%. Shares in Tech Mahindra climbed 4.90% while Infosys posted a 4.44% rise, with both counters providing the primary upward thrust behind the broader market's session-end gains.
Hindustan Unilever added 2.94% and Trent climbed 2.61%, placing both among the session's advancers. Shares in Bajaj Finserv climbed 2.43%, with Bajaj Finance posting a rise of 2.27% over the same period.
Shares in the banking and financial services sectors added weight to the broader market advance. Trading in bank-linked equities pushed the Nifty Bank measure up by 1.03% to close at 55,481.05, while the broader Nifty Financial Services measure advanced 1.46%, settling at 25,228.55. Gains of 1.44% for the PSU Bank gauge and 0.74% for its private-sector counterpart left both Nifty banking segments in positive territory.
Realty-sector shares led the afternoon's advance, with their tracking index adding 2.46 percentage points, while consumer durables stocks posted a 1.56% uptick on the Nifty board. A 1.23% uptick pushed the Nifty Auto index higher on the day.
Broader-based indices also posted gains, with the Nifty 200 climbing 1.38%, the Nifty 500 adding 1.22%, and the Nifty 100 finishing 1.46% higher. Both the Nifty Midcap 100 and its 150-stock counterpart posted gains on the day, advancing 1.06% and 0.97% respectively.
Fractional gains spread across the smallcap segment, with the Nifty Smallcap 250 and Nifty Smallcap 50 posting rises of 0.34% and 0.35% respectively, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 added a narrower 0.11%. Trading in FMCG-linked equities pushed the sectoral gauge up by 1.40 percentage points, with metal stocks adding a further 1.15-point advance to their own benchmark.
Gains of 0.42% were recorded by the Nifty Media index during the session. The Nifty Pharma index edged down by just 0.01%, leaving the broader pharma segment essentially unchanged on the day. A 0.19-point dip brought the Nifty MidSmall Healthcare index lower in that session.
The India VIX gauge retreated by 7.26 percentage points, settling at a reading of 14.15.
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, attributed the uptick in Indian equities to technology earnings that came in ahead of forecasts, noting that the stronger results built confidence around corporate profit trajectories and gave a lift to large-cap stocks that carry the most weight in the benchmark indices. With the rupee holding steady and bond yields on a downward path, financial stocks drew renewed attention, Nair said, while also noting that inflation hovering near the upper limit of the RBI's tolerance band — combined with energy market turbulence tied to geopolitical tensions — pointed toward a cautious policy stance that could keep broader market movement confined to a narrow range.
Early momentum from the IT sector, paired with broader expectations of a reasonable second-quarter earnings picture, points to valuations that already account for an uneven external backdrop.
