India placed fourth on the medals table at the 2026 Asian Games, accumulating 85 medals across disciplines — with gold-medal victories in cricket and hockey anchoring the haul, and archery, boxing, and athletics each contributing notable returns — a total that came in below the record-setting performance the country had delivered at Hangzhou three years earlier.
Around 500 athletes representing India competed across the 20th running of the continental multisport gathering held in Aichi-Nagoya, with the country's delegation finishing on a tally of 21 gold medals, 27 silver, and 37 bronze. At the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games, a contingent of 650 athletes put together a haul of 106 medals — a benchmark that India's latest tally falls just short of, placing it among the two highest totals the continental competition has ever produced. At the Hangzhou Games, a medal haul of 28 gold, 38 silver, and 40 bronze was recorded across the national team's events.
Track and field events drove the medal count for India at Aichi-Nagoya, with 24 podium finishes claimed through athletics alone, while the shooting range contributed a further 15 — three of them gold. Archery led all disciplines with podium finishes on five occasions, while boxing contributed three gold-medal performances of its own.
At the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Lovlina Borgohain claimed a gold medal in boxing, placing her among a small group of Indian athletes to reach that podium and making her only the second woman from the country to do so, following Mary Kom's earlier achievement at that same event. Gold-medal finishes in wrestling went to both Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal, with each athlete claiming the top podium position in their respective bouts.
Across team-based disciplines, the country's athletes put together a strong collective showing. Gold medals in both cricket competitions at the Asian Games went to the same squads that had claimed them previously, with the women's side overcoming Sri Lanka and the men's side overcoming Pakistan in their respective championship bouts. Gold medals went to both the kabaddi squads — men's and women's — while the women's hockey side brought home an Asian Games title for the first time in 44 years.
A number of athletes competing in Japan added their names to the record books. Gold in the women's golf competition at the Asian Games went to Pranavi Urs, marking the first time an Indian woman had taken that title at the continental event, while 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod secured the individual recurve archery crown at the continental championships, a feat no Indian woman had previously achieved. Alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma, Mohod formed the trio that captured team recurve gold at the Games — a title no Indian women's side had previously taken home.
Trap shooter Neeru Dhanda claimed the opening individual gold of the competition for India, while the pair of Kumkum and Suruchi Singh set Asian records on their way to topping the mixed team 10m air pistol podium.
Podium places came to three athletes across two track-and-field disciplines: Vithya Ramraj claimed bronze in the women's 400 metres hurdles after her finishing time erased a national record that had remained unbroken for four decades, while the men's javelin threw up a pair of Indian medallists in Yash Vir Singh, who took silver, and Rohit Yadav, who collected bronze — both stepping into a contest that Neeraj Chopra entered without, sidelined by injury.
At these championships, Sawan Barwal stepped onto the marathon podium — an achievement no Indian runner had managed in more than four decades — and in doing so also pushed the national record to a fresh high, while Sarvesh Kushare added a men's high jump podium finish that the country had gone more than fifty years without. At the Asian Games, Elangovan Baranica secured a podium finish in the pole vault — an outcome that placed her among a group no Indian athlete in that discipline had previously joined.
Among the milestones recorded during the campaign were two that stood out for their discipline-specific rarity: Suchika Tariyal stepped onto the podium in mixed martial arts to claim the country's first Asian Games medal in that event, while Jay Meena reached the semifinals of soft tennis — a run that placed him in the same category of trailblazers.
A silver medal in the 49kg weightlifting category at the Asian Games went to Mirabai Chanu — her first podium finish at the continental competition — with the achievement also marking the first time India had claimed a medal in the discipline at the Games since Bangkok hosted the event in 1998. Podium hardware at the continental level came to Roshibina Devi for the third straight time in wushu, while a 16-year gap in Indian distance running closed when Seema Kumari collected a medal in the women's 10,000m.
At the Asian Games, Anahat Singh claimed a silver medal in women's singles — a feat no Indian woman had managed before in that event — while both she and Abhay Singh advanced all the way through to their respective singles finals.
Berths for the 2028 Los Angeles Games came through for the country in both archery and hockey. At the Aichi-Nagoya Games, quota places for the Olympics were on offer across seven disciplines — archery, hockey, sailing, squash, surfing, tennis, and triathlon. Qualification spots secured across four disciplines — men's hockey, women's hockey, compound mixed team archery, and women's individual recurve archery — extended India's Asian Games presence into Olympic competition.
A medal haul of 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze brought India's participation in the competition to a close. Friday's medal count reached 12, with six of those topping the podium — boxing alone accounting for three of the gold finishes. Nine medals came India's way on the 17th day of competition — the second-to-last on the schedule — with team gold secured in both cricket and hockey, and further top-place finishes delivered individually by Aman Sehrawat, Kumkum Anil Mohod, and golfer Pranavi Urs.
A 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final allowed the men's cricket side to hold onto the gold medal. Four athletes carried the nation's flag across the podium at those competitions — Kumkum Anil Mohod claiming a gold that marked the first time a woman had reached the top of the recurve individual event for India, Aman Sehrawat taking the wrestling title, Antim Panghal finishing with a silver medal, and Deepak Punia adding a bronze to the collection.
Pranavi Sharath Urs claimed the gold medal in Women's Individual Golf — the first such title taken by a female golfer from India at this level — while the Women's Team collected a silver in the team event. Bronze medal honours went to Neeraj Chauhan, rounding out a podium sweep claimed entirely by Indian athletes.
