A haul of 85 medals — built from 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze — carried India to fourth place on the overall standings table at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, with Uzbekistan, Iran, and Thailand all placed below them in the rankings.
Across a fourteen-day span, athletes in Indian track and field posted winning performances at a level the discipline had not previously seen, erased long-standing records, and earned places on the Olympic roster. Among the sports on the programme, cricket furnished India with a number of its most talked-about performances throughout the Games.
Captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, the women's side retained their Asian Games crown after posting a 147-run victory over Sri Lanka in the tournament's concluding match. Knocks of 61 from 28 balls by Abhishek Sharma and an unbeaten 51 off 45 deliveries from Tilak Varma powered the batting side to 211 for 6 in the T20 final, a target that Pakistan could not overhaul despite Hasan Nawaz reaching 96 in pursuit, with the 19-run margin completing a cricket double for India at the Asian Games.
Among all the disciplines on the programme, hockey produced one of the more historically consequential outcomes of the entire competition. Beating China by a single goal, the women's hockey team secured both a gold medal — their first at this tier since 1982, ending a 44-year wait — and automatic qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in the same result. A 5-1 result against Malaysia handed the men's squad both retention of their Asian Games crown and a confirmed place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
According to records from the tournament, that edition of the Asian Games marked the only occasion on which both the men's and women's hockey squads from India claimed gold medals at the same event.
At the Asian Games, Aman Sehrawat claimed gold in the men's freestyle 57kg event — a title no Indian wrestler had previously taken home — by outscoring North Korea's reigning world champion Han Chong-song 11-7 across the final bout. Sujeet Kalkal's triumph at 65kg freestyle handed the wrestling contingent consecutive men's freestyle victories within a single Asian Games — a double that had last been put together in the 1978 tournament.
At 17, Kumkum Mohod claimed a place in Asian Games history by taking the individual recurve archery gold — a title no Indian woman had previously held — after edging out Oh Yejin of South Korea in a shoot-off that went to the final arrow. That gold medal ended a winning streak in the women's recurve team event that had belonged to South Korea for the better part of three decades.
Pranavi Urs claimed the individual golf title — the first time an Indian woman had taken that honour in the sport at the Asian Games — and then added a silver medal through her role in the team event. Neeru Dhanda, competing in trap shooting, secured the women's individual gold — a title the country had not held for 48 years — and then paired with Kynan Chenai in the mixed trap team event, where their combined score of 34 hits across 40 attempts set a new Asian record for that discipline.
With her triumph in the 75kg weight class at the Asian Games, Lovlina Borgohain joined Mary Kom as one of only two Indian women to have claimed a boxing gold medal at that competition. Gold medals in boxing also came to both Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, each claiming top honours within their own weight division.
A national record in the 400m hurdles that PT Usha had held since 1984 — a tenure stretching across roughly four decades — was surpassed through Vithya Ramraj's run in the event. Barwal's performance in the marathon brought a podium finish to India for the first time in 44 years. At the Asian Games, Baranica Elangovan claimed a podium finish in women's pole vault — a result that placed her in the record books as the first athlete from India to do so in that discipline.
A podium finish by Chanu in the weightlifting competition marked the first time an Indian athlete had claimed a medal in that discipline at the Asian Games since Karnam Malleswari's silver-medal performance in Bangkok twenty-six years earlier, in 1998. At the Asian Games, a squash women's singles runner-up finish placed Anahat Singh in the record books as the first player from India to reach that podium position in the event.
Satnam Singh and Salman Khan claimed a double sculls podium finish at the Asian Games, a feat no rowing pair from their country had previously managed at that competition. Tariyal's performance in mixed martial arts at the Asian Games put a medal on the board for India in that discipline for the first time.
A handful of competitors took home multiple gold medals, collecting titles in both solo and team competitions. Two gold medals and a silver were among the honours Neeru Dhanda collected by the time competition wrapped up. Kumkum Mohod gathered a total of three podium finishes during the event — two of them gold, one silver. Two gold medals in compound archery went to Chikitha Taniparthi across the course of the competition, and two gold medals in compound archery went to Sahil Jadhav across the competition. A gold medal and a silver medal in golf were both collected by Pranavi Urs. Three podium finishes came Singh's way across a trio of distance disciplines — a pair of silver medals from the 10,000m and 1,500m, along with a bronze from the 5,000m.
Of the 21 gold medals India collected, athletics furnished one through the women's 4x400m relay squad; shooting contributed three via the air pistol mixed team, Neeru Dhanda's individual trap performance, and the mixed trap pairing of Dhanda alongside Kynan Chenai; kabaddi and hockey each yielded two through their respective men's and women's sides; cricket likewise produced two across both formats; compound archery delivered three as the women's team, the mixed team, and the men's team all topped their disciplines; recurve archery added two more through the women's team and Kumkum Mohod's individual effort; boxing supplied three courtesy of Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, and Ankush Panghal; wrestling brought two via Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal; and golf rounded out the tally with Pranavi Urs claiming the final title.
The 85-medal total spanned archery, shooting, hockey, and wrestling, among other disciplines, where long-running commitments to athlete development have produced results across generations. Hockey's contribution to India's LA 2028 Olympic berths means two of the country's prominent Olympic disciplines have their qualification secured ahead of the Games. Closing ceremonies for the Games are set for October 4.
