HCL Technologies stock touched an intraday high of Rs 1,275.40 on Tuesday — a rise of as much as 4.54% — after the IT company posted second-quarter FY27 results that outpaced analyst projections. By 9:27 am, each HCLTech share had climbed to Rs 1,274.70, reflecting a gain of 4.48% on the day. Benchmark index BSE Sensex posted a gain of 0.53%, putting its value at the 72,302 mark.
Quarterly numbers that topped Street estimates on both profit margins and operational performance left analysts at Citi, Kotak Securities, and JPMorgan divided on the company's direction — a split that persisted even as some of those brokerages revised their price targets upward or left them unchanged.
Quarterly results drew support from gains in both revenue and operating margins, though investor attention centred on the updated FY27 revenue outlook alongside what leadership had to say about demand trends, contract wins, and the trajectory of profitability.
For the July-to-September quarter of FY27, HCLTech posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 5,132 crore, reflecting an 11% rise over the Rs 4,624 crore recorded in the preceding quarter. That figure cleared the Rs 4,875 crore consensus projection analysts had set for the period. Quarterly revenue climbed to Rs 35,620 crore — up from Rs 34,579 crore in the period before — nudging past the Rs 35,547 crore that analysts had projected.
Operating-level profitability, measured by earnings before interest and tax, climbed to Rs 6,465 crore in Q2 FY27 — a 10.9% gain over the Rs 5,831 crore posted in the preceding quarter and ahead of the analyst consensus of Rs 6,243 crore. The operating margin for earnings before interest and taxes climbed to 18.1%, up from 16.7% the quarter before — a 140-basis-point gain that also cleared the analyst consensus forecast of 17.56%.
Nudging the bottom of its constant-currency revenue growth forecast for FY27 upward, HCLTech left its operating margin target unchanged. Projected full-year revenue expansion has been revised upward to a band of 2.5%–4%, lifting the floor from the prior forecast of 1%–4%. Guidance on services revenue has been tightened to a band of 3%–4%, narrowing from the earlier projected span of 1.5%–4.5%. Profitability guidance, expressed as an EBIT margin band of 17.5% to 18.5%, has been held at its current level without adjustment.
A second interim payout of Rs 12 per share was declared by HCL Technologies for its shareholders. Shareholders seeking to confirm their eligibility for the distribution are required to appear on the register as of October 16, 2026, the date formally designated for that purpose. Qualifying shareholders can expect the dividend to land in their accounts on or before 26 October 2026.
A headcount gain of 6,450 staff during the second quarter of FY27 put HCLTech back on a growth footing, contrasting with the 3,292-person contraction the technology company had posted in the three months through June. Workforce departures at the firm ticked up by a tenth of a percentage point during Q1 FY27, landing at 12.8%.
Figures released by the company pointed to new bookings in the most recent quarter reaching their second-highest level in the organisation's history, while the opening six months of the year delivered a first-half result that outpaced any comparable period on record. Software division revenue slipped from one quarter to the next, pulling at the company's broader growth numbers.
Executives flagged that orders had been gathering pace throughout the previous three months, while also noting that broader trading conditions were yet to stabilise. Profit margins at the operational level came in above the targets HCLTech had set for itself.
Profitability drew support from a combination of wider margins on artificial intelligence revenue streams, operational cost leverage, and currency movements. The company's leadership noted that profits are earmarked for reinvestment aimed at bolstering its standing in the artificial intelligence arena. The firm also stated it did not anticipate any material disruption to its operations from PERM filings.
Acquisitions and similar external deals are projected to add roughly 62 basis points to the FY27 services revenue growth target and around 87 basis points to the broader company-wide revenue growth figure. Acquisition-driven activity added 97 basis points to the results recorded across the second quarter.
Three separate forces lifted the margin during the period: revenue tied to advanced AI work added 32 basis points, operational scale contributed a further 50, and currency movements across foreign exchange markets brought an additional 23. Two cost pressures weighed on margins during the period: restructuring expenses that trimmed 22 basis points, and the absorption of the HP telecom solutions acquisition, which pulled margins down by a further 25 basis points.
Analysts at several brokerages pointed to rising wage costs and related expenditure as potential drags on margins through the back half of the year, even as quarterly profitability had been trending upward.
Citi kept its bearish stance on HCLTech intact, though analysts there edged the stock's price target modestly higher — moving the figure from Rs 1,030 to Rs 1,050. The brokerage characterised the quarterly results as adequate, citing an unexpected lift in margins as an underpinning factor. Software revenue came in below expectations, and the outlook for services income pointed toward a more measured pace of growth in the months ahead.
In its note, Citi reported that the company's leadership held an optimistic view on services expansion landing just above the midpoint of its forecast band, while also pointing to whether the improved margin performance could be sustained as a question worth watching. According to the brokerage's analysis, HCLTech's market valuation sits roughly 20%–25% above what investors currently assign to industry peers Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys.
A Reduce call on HCLTech stayed in place at Kotak Securities, though the accompanying price target edged upward to Rs 1,220 from the earlier figure of Rs 1,200. Stronger-than-expected margins and an expanding services segment still fell short of offsetting weakness in the products division, the brokerage's analysts concluded. Order activity drew attention as well, with contract wins of notable scale lending momentum to the upward trend in bookings. Kotak updated its projected band for organic revenue expansion in FY27, placing the range at 1.6% on the lower end and 3.1% at the upper end.
An Underweight stance on HCLTech stock, paired with a Rs 1,080 price target, remained in place at JPMorgan. Revised guidance from the brokerage pointed to a midpoint that reflected a trimmed-back growth projection. Wage increases, the assessment noted, stood to generate pressure on profit margins of roughly 140 basis points during the back half of FY27. Organic growth that landed near the middle of HCLTech's own projected range — rather than above it — has drawn JPMorgan's attention to whether the stock's valuation premium remains justified.
