Zelenskyy Offers Elections in Exchange for 60-Day Ceasefire, Responds to Trump's Leadership Comments

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed holding national elections if Russia agrees to a 60-day total ceasefire, responding to US President Donald Trump's public call for new Ukrainian leadership. Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is prepared to stop attacking Russian oil refineries if Moscow halts strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

In a broadcast interview, Zelenskyy laid out terms for holding elections in Ukraine, stating that a full cessation of fighting lasting 60 days would need to be in place first — with that two-month window of uninterrupted calm representing, in his telling, the only condition standing between the present situation and an organised vote, a message he directed at Putin through the public record. Trump voiced objections Saturday to Zelenskyy's order to strike Russian oil refineries — a directive that came just a day after Washington had walked back, on a temporary basis, the sanctions targeting Russian fuel supplies that had been designed to limit the income Moscow draws on to fund its military operations in Ukraine — and told reporters at the White House that he held the view that Ukraine's leadership ought to be replaced. Zelenskyy pushed back on what he described as a pattern of blaming Ukraine for elevated fuel costs, pointing instead to the Middle East conflict as the force driving prices upward, and tied that position to a proposal — floated the same Sunday — under which Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries would be suspended provided Moscow stopped targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure in return.
