Wasim Jaffer, who built his career as an opening batter for India, has put his name forward for a position on the BCCI's senior men's selection panel, with his candidacy coming as Ajit Agarkar's time in the role draws to a close. Sources indicate that the board is inclined to keep Pragyan Ojha, the former India spinner, in the chief selector's role.
Jaffer has been named among those being considered for the open role, according to available information. Ojha, who has been carrying out the duties of interim chief selector following Agarkar's exit, is reportedly the preferred candidate within the BCCI. Jaffer put in an application for the role, as he later made clear.
Across 31 Test appearances in an Indian batting lineup, the opening role yielded 1,944 runs for Jaffer, with five of those innings reaching three-figure totals. Under the current selection framework, the committee seat carrying the most Test caps also carries eligibility for the chairmanship — a rule that places his extensive experience in the longest format as a potential asset.
Twenty-four Test appearances for India formed part of Ojha's playing record. Unverified accounts of internal support within the selection panel could tilt the decision toward Ojha, despite Jaffer's more extensive Test record working in his favour.
Responsibility for choosing a new member to join the senior selection panel falls to the Cricket Advisory Committee. With the 2027 ODI World Cup among the fixtures on the horizon, the choice carries weight for the Indian cricket setup as it moves through a packed schedule of commitments ahead.
Following Agarkar's departure, responsibility for running selection meetings passed to Ojha. His familiarity with the current selection panel members, along with a read on the direction the team is heading, may position him favourably as the BCCI searches for someone to fill the vacancy.
Having stepped away from playing and moved into coaching roles, Jaffer carries a depth of knowledge drawn from years spent at the domestic level of the game. Any appointment that ultimately emerges from this process will hinge on how the Cricket Advisory Committee evaluates the pool of candidates alongside the preferences held by the BCCI.
Appointed to lead India's selection panel in July 2023, Agarkar stepped into the role with an ODI World Cup on home soil already on the horizon. A runners-up finish was all that tournament offered India, with Australia claiming the title in the final. Multiple trophies were added to the club's collection during the period he led the side.
Three ICC trophies arrived across a three-year stretch — the T20 World Cup of 2024 with Rohit Sharma at the helm, the 2025 Champions Trophy again under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, and the T20 World Cup of 2026 led by Suryakumar Yadav. Two Asia Cup trophies were added to the team's collection under his leadership.
When October 2026 arrived, Agarkar's contract lapsed without any move on his part to carry it forward. Among the responsibilities he carried as chief selector were calls on established players and squad configurations, with India's preparations for the next ODI World Cup shaping much of that decision-making.
