US Supreme Court Declines to Block Christa Pike's Execution
The U.S. Supreme Court denied petitions filed by Christa Pike's attorneys, allowing her scheduled execution to proceed on September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. Pike was convicted for the 1995 torture and killing of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville when she was 18 years old. Her defense team argued the execution would be unconstitutionally cruel due to her PTSD and history of sexual abuse as a minor. If carried out, she will be the first person executed in Tennessee for a crime committed at age 18 since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.
