Shares in a handful of prominent US chipmakers slipped on Monday, October 12, retreating from a run of recent advances as investors weighed the growing competitive threat posed by Chinese memory manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT).
Nvidia's stock price retreated by 2%, touching a session low of $224.90 per share. Shares of Broadcom, AMD, and Intel each lost ground on the day, posting drops of 1.2%, 3.3%, and 3.6% in that order. Losses of 4.2%, 5%, and 4.3% were recorded by Marvell Technology, Micron, and SK Hynix in turn.
Shares in Amazon and Tesla were among those that retreated, each shedding as much as 1% alongside broader losses across the technology sector. Nasdaq Composite trading slipped to an intraday floor of 27,240 — a drop of 0.46% — even as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average each edged into positive territory.
A memory-cell architecture designed to pack more data into less physical space has drawn development efforts from ChangXin Memory Technologies, placing the Chinese chipmaker alongside established players such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron, all of which have active programmes in the same technical territory. At a Shanghai industry gathering over the weekend, CXMT president Cao Kanyu outlined plans to roll out a server memory product built on the architecture before the close of 2026.
Driving the architecture forward is a layout principle known as "4F squared," where each individual storage cell is confined to a footprint equal to four times F multiplied by itself — F being the smallest line dimension achievable within the semiconductor process. By packing more individual cells into a single chip, this arrangement achieves a higher overall storage density.
At the heart of the 4F-squared architecture, according to CXMT, sits a Vertical Surrounding Gate transistor developed entirely within the company's own research programme. A vertical gate design tackles unwanted current leakage by shrinking the footprint of individual memory cells, allowing more data to be packed into the same physical space.
Following its July debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market, CXMT has taken a number of steps aimed at demonstrating what its technology can do. Disclosure that the company's G5 platform — its fifth-generation approach to DRAM manufacturing — had moved into full-scale production came in the preceding month.
Established in 2016, CXMT reported that work on the 4F-squared architecture had been under way from the company's earliest days, with the resulting body of intellectual property now spanning more than 300 patent families — a portfolio that, by the company's account, places it ahead of both domestic and international competitors in that area.
Climbing petroleum costs added downward pressure across broader financial markets. Brent crude futures climbed to $106.81 per barrel, a gain of two percent.
A strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday left 12 people dead and more than 300 others with injuries, with the attack attributed to Houthi forces operating out of Yemen, based on reporting from a news outlet. Ukrainian authorities stated that energy facilities throughout the country had been facing repeated aerial bombardment from Russian forces.
Trump indicated to reporters that he was weighing whether to join Saudi Arabia in military action against Houthi forces in Yemen, a group backed by Iran, after an attack on an airport in Riyadh.
