The demand follows Burnham's public defence of the club's ownership after an independent commission found Manchester City in breach of Premier League financial rules involving more than £900 million in alleged financial misconduct. Manchester City has filed an appeal and denied wrongdoing.

The Liberal Democrats, on Friday, pressed Andy Burnham to disclose details of any meetings he may have held with Manchester City's ownership group, Abu Dhabi representatives, or affiliated organisations — a request that arrived as his earlier comments about the club's ruling continued to draw attention. Prior to news of the potential sale reaching the public, Burnham — who held the Greater Manchester mayoralty between May 2017 and June 2026 — expressed reservations about the prospect of City's ownership group leaving, stating that the club's backers had contributed to transforming modern Manchester and to developing the club into one with a global profile. Opposition politicians pushed back against Burnham's remarks, among them Anna Sabine — the party's spokesperson on culture, media and sport — who put her concerns in writing to the Prime Minister, contending that football fans nationwide were entitled to see the rules applied without regard to wealth or influence, and asking why the Prime Minister had been so swift to stand behind the club's owners once the verdict came down. Demands that Andy Burnham release records of every interaction he has had with City Football Group, Abu Dhabi United Group, and UAE government officials throughout his mayoral tenure — encompassing any hospitality accepted — have surfaced at the same time as Manchester City's formal challenge to the independent commission verdict that found the club in violation of Premier League financial rules, with the club's appeal targeting both the finding itself and whatever sanctions might follow. That Tuesday's official statement outlined how City had put in place a range of commercial deals which the league characterised as deceptive, with those transactions purportedly enabling the club to inflate its reported revenues while suppressing recorded costs — a combined distortion the league put at more than £900 million (approximately $1.19 billion) over a period of close to nine years.
