UK Inflation Rises to 3.1 Per Cent in August Driven by Petrol and Diesel Price Increases
UK inflation rose to 3.1 per cent in August 2026, up from 2.9 per cent in July, according to the Office for National Statistics. The increase was driven primarily by rising petrol and diesel prices, with transport costs up 4.6 per cent year-on-year. Diesel reached its highest forecourt price since July 2022. The Bank of England, which targets 2 per cent inflation, is set to review its interest rate of 3.75 per cent on Thursday. An investment strategist at J.P. Morgan Personal Investing said the data is unlikely to prompt an immediate rate increase. Chancellor John Healey pointed to global factors, including the Middle East conflict, as contributing to worldwide inflation pressures.
