Late Sunday, Trump shared an AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform depicting a fighter jet pilot alongside visuals of Kharg Island engulfed in flames and structures appearing to have been struck by a missile. The footage ends with a substantial blast at Kharg Island, with flames advancing toward the aircraft's operator. Trump labelled the post with the caption "President DJT." The post was not accompanied by any supporting documentation of the alleged attack.
The statement was met with rejection by Iranian officials. Hamid Bovard, head of the National Iranian Oil Company, stated that no destruction was taking place at the Kharg Island oil facility, adding via Nournews that posts by Trump on the matter were without merit and that conditions at the site remained orderly.
Responses to the post spread widely across online platforms. The president subsequently republished the post without any accompanying caption. The post appeared shortly after Trump told news anchor Trey Gowdy in a televised interview that operations against Iran were going well and that the blockade had performed beyond expectations.
The financial penalties being imposed are described as extensive and far-reaching. No comparable precedent for this scale of impact has been recorded. The country is currently experiencing widespread institutional and economic difficulties.
Trump further stated that a formal agreement was not necessary, and that the situation would ultimately be resolved in his favour or through the other party's actions. Trump claimed that Iran had lost its naval forces, air force, leadership, and air defence systems, while asserting that the situation was progressing favourably. Trump indicated that the situation had left everything in ruins.
Trump described the Iranian population as resilient and intelligent, while offering a separate assessment of the country's leadership. Trump asserted that approximately 52,000 protesters had been killed by Iranian authorities in the three months preceding his statement, with the toll rising further in the period since, including fatalities among individuals who were not participating in demonstrations.
Reports indicate that Trump had considered an attack on Kharg Island at an earlier point that summer, a plan he ultimately chose not to carry out. In an earlier Truth Social post, Trump declared that the United States would strike Iran that evening with considerable force, noting that Iran's navy, air force, radar systems, anti-aircraft capabilities, and most of its offensive capacity had already been eliminated; he further indicated that the United States intended to seize Kharg Island at some point in the near future, and also outlined plans to target additional oil infrastructure and assume full control of Iran's oil and gas markets.
Located approximately 34 miles off the Bushehr coast in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island serves as the primary terminal through which nearly all of Iran's petroleum exports pass, with a throughput capacity of seven million barrels per day. A military attack on the island could substantially reduce the volume of oil Iran exports. Stationing troops on the island would bring forces into proximity with Iran's drone and missile arsenals.
Oil exports from the territory flow predominantly to Chinese markets. Taking control of or disabling the terminal could reduce revenue for the Iranian government and have consequences for worldwide petroleum markets.
