Texas Governor Greg Abbott Makes Campaign Stop in Huntsville as Poll Shows Tight Race

Texas Governor Greg Abbott held a campaign stop in Huntsville focused on affordability and law enforcement, while Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa held an event in Austin ahead of her statewide tour. A University of Texas Texas Politics Project poll shows the two candidates statistically tied as early voting approaches.

At a campaign appearance inside Huntsville's Honor Cafe, with early voting set to begin that Monday, Governor Greg Abbott spoke to attendees about household financial pressures and policing — telling the crowd that everyday goods had become harder to afford for Texas families, and that his affordability plan, which he characterized as broader in reach than any rival proposal on the ballot, was built to cut household costs by more than $4,000 per family. Ahead of an 11-day statewide tour set to begin Sunday, Hinojosa — a state representative from Austin with a Brazos Valley stop on her calendar for next week — gathered supporters at a campaign event where she framed the question of who Texas belongs to as the central political contest of this moment. Hinojosa put forward the argument that Texas state government may not be adequately addressing the needs of the people it represents. Hinojosa took her campaign to the street outside Abbott's Austin home, a stop that followed her public call for the governor to join her in a debate. In a written statement, Texas Democratic Party spokesman Jacob Long portrayed Abbott's trip to Huntsville as a way to sidestep a scheduled debate against Gina Hinojosa, and further contended that the governor had not yet addressed what Long viewed as a flawed governing record. Spending thirty years in office left him with considerable opportunity to pursue the very policies he is now championing on the campaign trail. Some opponents have pointed to increases in household expenses covering energy, groceries, and council rates during Abbott's time in office, alongside reductions in services at a number of state schools and tax incentive arrangements for data centres that ranked among the most favourable extended to any industry nationwide. Hinojosa maintained that photo opportunities and appeals rooted in fear would not mask what she characterised as Abbott's pattern of placing wealthy donors ahead of everyday working Texans, while Abbott, pushing back on those remarks, said his method — one he credited with producing results previously — was built around moving between communities to connect with as many voters as possible.
