Tesla has begun circulating a registration form for its autonomous ride-hailing service, gauging appetite among fleet operators interested in building out such a network or supplying supporting infrastructure. The document represents an initial step toward enabling third-party businesses to generate revenue from Tesla's Full Self-Driving driver-assistance technology, while individual owners who were previously told they could earn passive income through their vehicles have not yet gained that ability.
Tesla's Cybercab unveiling, featuring a driverless two-seat robotaxi, is timed to align with this debut. The gathering drew little public attention, with no online broadcast made available and press access largely restricted.
The sign-up form, titled to invite participation in building a robotaxi network, asks prospective partners to submit their name, email address, phone number, and company details for consideration in future opportunities. The form presents four options — Cybercab fleet vehicle purchasing, Mobility hubs and infrastructure, Event collaboration, and Other — though respondents may select only one to register their interest. Participants may also include supplementary comments and indicate their preferred geographic area for project deployment.
Tesla's robotaxi network has been expanding at a gradual pace. New market announcements tend to cluster around quarterly earnings periods, yet fleet deployment in those locations has frequently remained limited over time. The company has deployed geofenced Full Self-Driving software in Model Y vehicles to operate its robotaxi fleet.
The Cybercab rollout marks the point at which the two-seat, autonomy-focused vehicle becomes available to the public, offering a smaller footprint than a Model Y while delivering greater energy efficiency, according to available specifications. Tesla's robotaxi software has not been made available for independent review or public inspection.
A decade ago, Tesla began asserting that its vehicles were equipped for full self-driving capability, a claim the company has not yet fulfilled. The company claimed its vehicles would increase in value as a result of self-driving technology, allowing owners to deploy their cars for deliveries or ride-hailing services to generate income during periods of non-use. The feature was made available to customers at prices reaching $15,000.
Despite Tesla collecting fares through its robotaxi service for more than a year, no individual vehicle owner has yet generated revenue from the Full Self-Driving feature, contrary to the company's earlier projections. Elon Musk has previously stated that Tesla plans to transition away from direct vehicle sales once full autonomy is achieved, retaining its fleet to operate a transportation services business, which the company has projected would generate greater revenue. The expression of interest form is viewed by some as a move toward a model where vehicle access is limited to fleet operators or the manufacturer itself, rather than individual buyers.
A mobility hubs field also appears on the form, tied to Tesla's recent proposal to establish a robotic charging facility in San Francisco. Plans had been in place to take over a downtown San Francisco parking structure on a lease basis, converting the facility into a Supercharger hub capable of serving both conventional drivers and autonomous vehicle fleets. On the same day a planning meeting had been scheduled, the company withdrew its proposals.
A group of former Tesla staff have launched a UK-based venture called Hubber, with the aim of developing urban charging hubs designed to accommodate autonomous vehicle fleets.
Tesla has not yet achieved a fully autonomous driving system. Tesla's robotaxi programme has launched on a limited basis, deploying a small number of company-owned vehicles within defined urban zones that rely on pre-mapped routes and LiDAR technology — an approach that contrasts with the camera-only, neural-network methodology the company had previously promoted as capable of delivering full autonomous capability across all locations. Musk has again forecast that self-driving vehicles are on the near horizon, a projection he has put forward on multiple previous occasions.
The interest form's footer advises that submitting the form grants Tesla permission to reach out regarding the request, as well as to share details about its products, services, and local events through the contact details provided.
