Swiss Football Association Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino's FIFA Presidential Bid

The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino's bid for re-election, citing unresolved concerns over leadership, governance, and transparency within FIFA. The decision follows the SFV's earlier endorsement in June and adds to growing opposition from European football associations, with UEFA set to field a rival candidate before the November deadline.

The Swiss Football Association withdrew its support for Infantino — a native of Brig in the canton of Valais — after a meeting held earlier this week, reversing an endorsement it had granted in June; the body pointed to a thorough review of recent events, stating that a number of developments had prompted questions around leadership, governance, transparency and decision-making at FIFA, where Infantino, who is seeking another term in March, has faced growing opposition since plans to sell a shareholding in FIFA competitions, among them the World Cup, were disclosed in July. Criticism from the public led the authorities to abandon the proposals. This development represents another challenge for Infantino, coming after football associations in England, Wales, France, Serbia, and a number of other European nations withdrew their backing ahead of the ballot.
