Rahul Gandhi Questions PM Modi Over US Secretary of State Rubio's Upcoming India Visit

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Ministry of External Affairs' apparent silence regarding US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's scheduled visit to India from October 17 to 22. Gandhi's remarks followed Congress questioning why details of the expected meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Rubio in Mumbai were disclosed by the US Ambassador rather than the MEA.

In a formal exchange, Gandhi directed a question at the prime minister over why Indian officials had not been briefed on the visit or the diplomatic engagements that were expected to follow. In a post on X, Gandhi stated that Rubio had instructed his counterpart to make the trip to Mumbai. A day before those remarks, questions had been put to the government in Congress over its silence on the Rubio visit, with the ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, having noted that American officials were expecting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Rubio to hold talks in Mumbai. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh described the ambassador's comments as "extraordinary," questioning why details of the external affairs minister's meeting with Marco Rubio in Mumbai had been disclosed by a US official rather than the Ministry of External Affairs, given that the account of the exchange had reached the public through American channels rather than the Indian government.
