Congress leader Rahul Gandhi publicly questioned the Indian government over US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's planned meeting with Indian officials in Mumbai, after US envoy Sergio Gor announced that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar would attend. Gandhi and Congress party leaders noted that no official confirmation had been issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs. Rubio's India visit is scheduled between October 17 and 22, including stops in Gujarat and Mumbai.

The possibility stays on the table, should that be the direction preferred. The Congress party, on Thursday, called on the Ministry of External Affairs to account for its silence over the meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai — a query tied directly to Rubio's presence in India at the time. On the social media platform X, Ramesh drew attention to what he characterised as an atypical element within the statement — the listing of Dr Jaishankar among other attendees — before posing the question of why the domestic schedule of the external affairs minister had been made public through a channel other than the MEA's official spokesperson.
