Protests demanding that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar answer questions about alleged voting irregularities held their ground into Thursday, with steady downpours failing to drive away the gathered crowds. Ahead of the "Lehra do Tiranga" rally that the Cockroach Janta Party had scheduled at Connaught Place on October 16, officers took up positions across the area to manage the gathering. Protesters who had been singing "Vande Mataram" were placed into a police vehicle and transported from the scene. Demonstrations tied to voter roll deletions — led by student organisations and political groups — had been mounting, with the Election Commission facing calls to account for how it handled the process, all of it converging around Kumar. The removal of Jantar Mantar's long-held status as a designated protest venue has added to the list of grievances drawing people onto the streets. The detentions came the night before a tricolour-procession gathering at Central Park in Connaught Place — a Friday event called "Lehra do Tiranga" that Abhijeet Dipke, a co-founder of CJP, had put together. A Delhi-wide drive launched by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Thursday put pressure on authorities over what the organisation characterised as the deletion of qualified voters from electoral lists, with its demands centred on scrapping the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the removal of Kumar from his post.
