New York Sheriffs Escalate Legal Challenge Against State Law Banning ICE Cooperation Agreements
More than a dozen New York sheriffs and officials gathered in Albany to support a federal lawsuit challenging a new state law banning 287(g) ICE cooperation agreements. Filed on behalf of 15 sheriffs, the case argues the law violates the U.S. Constitution's Contracts Clause. Sheriffs contend their agreements only facilitated custodial transfers of individuals already in local criminal custody, not civil immigration enforcement. The state attorney general's office has sought dismissal of the case, while the U.S. Department of Justice has filed a separate legal challenge against the same statute.
