Members of the Cockroach Janta Party gathered in Mumbai for a second consecutive day of demonstrations, pressing for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what the party described as irregularities in voter rolls and related concerns. Physical confrontations broke out between officers and participants, resulting in no fewer than 300 people being taken into custody.
A rally at Shivaji Park drew hundreds of attendees on Sunday, with the event opening to participants around 4 pm. Within moments, CJP members reported that several of those present had been placed into police vehicles and transported from the scene.
Anjali Damania, known for her work on anti-corruption causes, was part of the group, as were a number of lawyers. Police in Mumbai closed off the park's access points before visitor numbers were expected to climb as the day moved into evening.
Kunal Kamerkar, who serves as the Thane coordinator for CJP, stated that the organisation had expected around 500 people to gather at Shivaji Park that Sunday, though police turned out in numbers twice what the group had anticipated. Those present were placed under detention almost immediately, with officers providing no explanation for the removal.
Police held a number of individuals at Tardeo police station who had no connection to the protest, according to accounts of the detentions. Chaitali Doshi, identified as a CJP member, recounted stepping out of a cab in front of Sena Bhavan, noting that by 6 pm roughly 25 people had been brought to that location. Officers intervened before any attempt to cross the road toward Shivaji Park could be made.
Kamerkar also alleged that a shopper travelling from Malad, who had no involvement in the protest, was taken into custody at Dadar without justification. He further alleged that one of those held at Tardeo police station — a person who maintained he had not taken part in any demonstration — experienced what appeared to be a fit or panic attack while detained there. Kamerkar noted that the individual was subsequently transported to a medical facility by stretcher. Paramedics transported the individual to Nair Hospital for treatment.
People gathered near eateries around Shivaji Park were moved on or taken into custody, according to those who observed the events. Sandeep Deshpande, an MNS leader, alleged that law enforcement had been in contact with Shivaji Park residents and Navratri mandals ahead of the CJP's presence there, stating that officers convened a gathering at Chaityabhoomi with those groups to prepare them to face off against CJP demonstrators. Addressing reporters, he stated that driving a wedge between members of the public falls outside the boundaries of their mandate.
Amit Thackeray of the MNS appeared at Shivaji Park to contest the detention of youths and demonstrators, with the party announcing plans for a protest gathering at 5 pm on Monday. Deshpande stated that those gathered at Shivaji Park station would remain there until the practice of detaining people came to an end.
Several other figures from the opposition publicly aligned themselves with the demonstrators. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Mahesh Sawant, along with Aaditya and Tejas Thackeray, took part in a demonstration outside Sena Bhavan, where the group positioned themselves in front of a police van transporting detainees. With a copy of the Indian Constitution in hand, Aaditya lowered himself onto the road alongside party workers, positioning the group directly in front of the vehicle.
In a post on X, Aaditya alleged that the BJP had ordered the arrest of students in Mumbai who were participating in peaceful protests against the government. Questions about whether Mumbai Police has been operating under directives from senior leadership — the same leadership that has stationed officers around its own premises — have drawn attention from observers.
A police official told reporters that those taken into custody had lacked the authorisation required to hold a demonstration at that location, adding that they had been brought to Worli and Tardeo police stations before being released. The official also noted that Shivaji Park was not designated as a protest venue and that Azad Maidan would be a more appropriate site for organisers to seek the necessary clearance.
Neighbourhood residents near Shivaji Park, who had initially expressed support for the demonstrations, told of ongoing disruptions tied to the heavy police deployment that accompanied them. A senior officer, responding to claims that bystanders had been taken in, explained that names and addresses were collected from people in the area specifically to avoid detaining anyone with no connection to the protests.
At Connaught Place in New Delhi on Sunday, a group of demonstrators from Mumbai were taken into custody, while a separate statement noted that arrests in Mumbai itself had been confined to protesters alone. Abhishek Kamble, identified as one of the protesters, recounted that he and others had been loaded into a van and transported away. Those being transported were kept moving through Delhi for roughly six to seven hours before the vehicle stopped at the Dwarka police post, situated near the Delhi-Haryana border.
Backers of CJP had gathered at the location beforehand and provided assistance to those disembarking from the vehicle. Upon requesting an explanation for their detention and the force used against them, protesters reported that a uniformed officer bearing three stars struck fellow demonstrator Pranay Ahire, and a second officer delivered a knee strike to Pranay's ribs. He remained unresponsive on the road for somewhere between five and ten minutes.
Bystanders from the local area, along with CJP Nagpur supporters, lifted Pranay onto a cot and transported him to a nearby government hospital, where he was admitted and staff remained with him through the late hours of the night.
