Mumbai Police File Abetment to Suicide Case Against IIT Bombay Professor Following Student's Death

Mumbai Police have registered an abetment to suicide case against IIT Bombay Professor Suryanarayan Dulla following the death of second-year student Sahil Wakode, who died after being caught using ChatGPT during an examination. The student's family has alleged caste-based abuse and harassment over a period of more than three months. The institute stated no formal disciplinary action was taken and that the student was counselled. The case has since been transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation.

A case of abetment to suicide has been registered by Mumbai Police against IIT Bombay faculty member Professor Suryanarayan Dulla in connection with the death of a second-year student. The FIR, lodged on the basis of a complaint submitted by the student's father, does not name two of the individuals facing accusations. Sahil Wakode's father has raised accusations of caste-based discrimination, intimidation, and harassment following his son's death by suicide after being found using ChatGPT during an exam. The individual alleges that the mistreatment persisted for more than three months, purportedly carried out under the orders of Director Shireesh B Kedare. Sahil's mother has put forward a comparable assertion, claiming that her son lost his life. He faced persistent harassment. "I want justice," the individual stated, while Mumbai Police confirmed that the matter was handed over to the Crime Branch for further investigation on Saturday evening. A second-year student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, Sahil Wakode, was found to have a mobile phone on his person during an examination. According to the institution, he posted the test paper to an AI platform to obtain answers while the assessment was underway. No punitive measures were taken against the student, according to institute representatives, who noted that the matter had been addressed through direct conversation with him. Both the instructor and the Head of the Department spoke with him, offering guidance and reassurance that the matter would have no bearing on his prospects going forward. After the meeting concluded, Wakode went back to his room, where he was discovered dead that evening. IIT Bombay released a statement saying the institution was providing assistance to those affected, including the student's peers, classmates, faculty, and others connected to the incident. Investigators from the relevant authorities are examining the circumstances of the death.
