A Michigan woman delivered homemade tamales to neighbours her family alleges contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement to report them, according to her daughter Andrea, whose footage of the episode spread widely across social media.
In a TikTok video she posted, Andrea said her neighbours had told her directly they were the ones who contacted ICE about her family. Despite that, the neighbours contacted her mother to request a batch of tamales when she next prepared them. Her mother set aside a portion at their request, as cooking tamales had already been part of her plans for the coming weekend.
The footage, captured by Andrea, opens in a domestic kitchen setting and shows her mother in the process of preparing a large quantity of tamales. Positioned at the stove, she lifts the masa dumplings from a large pot and arranges them on a plate. She then divides the food between two plastic bags, carries them out the door, and walks toward the neighbours' house with the camera following her. The recording ends before she reaches the neighbours' doorstep, leaving the exchange itself uncaptured.
In the caption accompanying the video, Andrea noted that her mother had chosen to bring tamales to the neighbours despite the family's allegation that those same neighbours had contacted immigration authorities to report them.
Public response online was divided. Part of the audience interpreted the tamales as a peace-oriented gesture and responded with approval toward the mother's approach. A portion of viewers took the position that her response toward those who had allegedly attempted to arrange her family's deportation was insufficiently firm. One internet user characterised the neighbours' conduct — reporting the family and then requesting food from them — as a serious moral failing.
The neighbours were not identified by name in Andrea's post, and their account of events had not entered the public record at the time of publication. Numerous commenters noted admiration for the resilience Andrea's mother had shown. Commenters also described the woman as embodying values associated with Christian teaching and noted that love holds greater power than hate.
The clip circulated at a time when protests had gathered outside the agency's Broadview detention facility in the Chicago area, where enforcement activity by immigration authorities had drawn organised opposition. The video was among several involving Latino families that spread widely on social media, including footage of a Latino couple's engagement in California that was interrupted by a demand that they leave the country.
A response Andrea shared online drew attention in part because of a reply that did not take a clear position on the matter. At the close of her caption, Andrea mentioned that her mother — referred to as "Tia" — had expressed a wish to welcome her followers into her home someday to share tamales together.
