Meta Unveils Wonder and Wonder Full AI Models to Compete with OpenAI and Anthropic

Meta has launched two new frontier AI models, Wonder and Wonder Full, claiming performance comparable to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the models on X, noting they represent the next generation beyond Meta's previous Spark models. The launch comes alongside a $14 billion investment in Scale AI and the appointment of Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer. The models are accessible through Meta's Muse app for paid subscribers, with the company projecting AI investment spending of up to $145 billion for the year.

Meta unveiled two artificial intelligence models — Wonder and Wonder Full — on Monday, with the company asserting that both perform at a level comparable to those offered by OpenAI and Anthropic; in an X post, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg placed Wonder within a broader, more advanced tier than the earlier Muse Spark line, describing the new releases as sitting at what he termed the frontier, as the company has spent roughly the past year working to strengthen its standing among prominent AI developers while also looking to diversify its income streams away from their long-held dependence on advertising revenue. Alexandr Wang, co-founder of Scale AI, was drawn into the San Francisco company's operations as part of a $14 billion investment arrangement finalised that June. Wonder, the company's first product to reach the public in the window after Spark — a frontier-tier model Meta put out in April — lands at a point when Meta has been steering away from the open-source Llama architecture, which observers had noted was performing below the level of rival systems. Writing on X, Wang characterised Wonder as the most advanced model his company had produced, and noted that it performed comparably to the field's foremost AI laboratories — a description that commentators generally read as pointing to OpenAI and Anthropic. Meta has channelled substantial funding into its artificial intelligence ambitions, even as unresolved questions about the technology's safety and security persist.
