Marathi Thriller Gondhal Set for Preview Screenings Ahead of Worldwide Release as India's Oscar Entry

The Marathi psychological thriller Gondhal, India's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, will hold exclusive preview screenings in six Indian cities from October 9 before a wider worldwide release in six languages. Directed by Santosh Davakhar, the film centers on a young bride who manipulates a sacred rural Maharashtra ritual in a psychological confrontation and stars Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam, and Yogesh Sohoni.

The run gets under way on October 9, when four venues each in Mumbai and Pune take the first bookings, after which the schedule fans out to cover the remaining cities on the itinerary. A newly married couple anchors the narrative, their lives shaped by the pull of Gondhal — a performance tradition from rural Maharashtra in which music, dance, and mythological storytelling are bound together. According to the film's official synopsis, Suman — a young bride who feels confined within her marriage — draws on Sarjerao's deep attachment to the Gondhal ritual, turning that sacred practice into a focal point of conflict with far-reaching consequences.
