Marathi Thriller Gondhal Set for Pan-India Theatrical Release on November 13

Marathi folk thriller Gondhal, directed by Santosh Davakhar and selected as India's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, is set for a pan-India theatrical release on November 13. The film will be available in six languages — Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Set in rural Maharashtra, the story follows a woman entangled in a troubled marriage who manipulates a sacred overnight folk ritual, leading to a night of crime and conflict. The film stars Kishor Kadam, Ishitaa Deshmukh and others, with music by Ilaiyaraaja.

The Film Federation of India's decision on 18 September to put the film forward as the country's official submission came before it had reached cinemas, drawing attention to the production ahead of its theatrical debut. Rooted in the folk traditions of Maharashtra, the story moves through a single night to lay bare concealed truths while tracing village communal rhythms alongside a fractured bond between two characters. Pointing to 13 November as the nationwide release date, he said the timing would bring the story's arc to completion, then put forward the view that genuine emotion allows film to cross language barriers — and that knowing audiences across India would watch this rural Maharashtra-set tale of Suman, a young woman in a troubled marriage, unfold together on theatre screens left him with a sense of gratitude. Her bond with the Gondhal ritual, rooted in long-held devotion, ends up serving her interests. The overnight ceremony draws the community into a web of competing interests, disputed power, and allegiances pulled in opposing directions. Those at the heart of the matter face a reckoning before the night draws to a close, as events have moved beyond anyone's ability to contain them. Drawing on the Gondhal ritual and the textures of rural Maharashtra, the story builds toward a study of obsession and the tensions that pull at human relationships.
