On Tuesday, Katie Zacharia took her place at the White House briefing room lectern for the first time as press secretary. The appearance lasted 14 minutes, during which she worked through scripted notes, fielded three questions, and then left.
Her professional background includes a period at the Department of Homeland Security and a role at Trump Media and Technology Group before her White House appointment. Zacharia has identified herself as a lawyer, though when a journalist asked whether she had passed the bar, her response — "When I moved to China" — left the timing of her legal qualification unverified.
Dressed in a dark jacket fitted with oversized gold buttons, Zacharia addressed reporters as the sixth person to hold the White House press secretary role under Trump. At the briefing, Breitbart News reporters were called upon before those from Fox News.
Zacharia told journalists that turnout at campaign rallies had reached unprecedented levels, with substantial numbers of Americans filling venues in backing of the Republican ticket. Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy raised the question of whether intelligence-sharing arrangements with Ukraine had been paused, and Zacharia indicated that a follow-up on the matter would be needed before she could provide an answer.
When a Daily Mail reporter raised questions about a bribery allegation tied to Kimberly Guilfoyle — the U.S. ambassador to Greece and former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr. — Zacharia stated that the administration had requested her resignation. "She has been a valuable member of the team and we wish her well," Zacharia said.
A reporter then raised a question about Zacharia's living arrangements, noting that her husband and four children remain based in California. Zacharia told reporters that time away from her children on weekday evenings was something she would not tolerate, and she named the president as a figure who had expressed backing for working mothers.
During her response, Zacharia momentarily used the phrase "my president" before substituting "my husband," then described Trump as the most family-oriented president the country had ever seen. She offered that characterisation without supporting evidence.
To close the briefing, Zacharia told reporters that Trump would be available for questions on the South Lawn shortly. She also conveyed that her employer had taken her family situation — she has four children — into account when placing her in the role, and that the trust extended to her under those arrangements gave her confidence she could meet its demands.
Shortly after the briefing, Trump expressed a favourable view of her performance. The Lincoln Project — a political organisation that opposes Trump — published an image pairing Zacharia with a head of lettuce, a reference widely associated with Liz Truss, the former British prime minister whose tenure lasted 49 days before she stepped down.
Anthony Scaramucci — whose 11-day stint as communications director gave rise to the unit of political time bearing his name — posted on social media that "the clock is running." At that point, Zacharia's tenure had covered roughly one-eleventh of a Scaramucci.
