Josh Brolin has publicly expressed disappointment at Prime Video's decision to cancel Outer Range — a series that combined Western, science-fiction, and mystery elements across 15 episodes and two seasons before its run concluded. Two years after the streaming platform ended the show, the actor reflected on what the experience had meant to him and indicated he wished the outcome had been different.
When Prime Video launched Outer Range in April 2022, the series — conceived by Brian Watkins — placed Brolin's character, Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott, at the centre of an unfolding struggle to keep his family and land intact. A dark void discovered on his property sets off a chain of events — among them apparent time displacement, the surfacing of long-held family secrets, and occurrences that defy conventional explanation — drawing his already complicated personal life in a new direction.
Rounding out the cast were Imogen Poots as Autumn Rivers, Lili Taylor and Tom Pelphrey as Cecilia and Perry Abbott, Lewis Pullman in the role of Rhett Abbott, Tamara Podemski portraying Deputy Sheriff Joy Hawk, and Will Patton taking on the part of Wayne Tillerson.
Outer Range had built two seasons' worth of narrative momentum when it lost its renewal — cancelled in July 2024, barely six weeks after its second season had wrapped. In a television interview, Brolin spoke about how the abrupt cancellation had affected him, describing his response as a blend of conflicting feelings in which no single reaction had taken hold.
He noted that while the experience was not wholly without merit, the pace of production left insufficient room for the story to be developed with the care it warranted. He also noted that his time as a series lead roughly two decades before Outer Range had not been an unpleasant one. He indicated the pace proved higher than the situation could accommodate and that the work received insufficient attention.
Brolin further noted that releasing the work amounted to a fairly routine matter, and that the productions he had been involved in were ones he personally regarded as having merit.
Audiences who watched the Amazon series described a mood of quiet melancholy that stayed with them after the final episode. Outer Range drew genuine enthusiasm, and the subsequent work of cast members Tom Pelphrey, Lewis Pullman, and Imogen Poots has been a source of continued appreciation among viewers.
The show's second season was characterised by its host platform as a response to the pressure campaign that had sought to keep it on air. That season broadened the show's supernatural underpinnings, drawing the Abbott family deeper into questions surrounding the void and its origins, while one character reflected that the situation amounted to possessing something of rare value.
Plotlines that had been building across the run of the series were left without resolution when the production ended, leaving viewers without any account of what ultimately became of the characters they had followed. Prime Video did not offer any public rationale for ending Outer Range.
During its opening run, the show logged five weeks inside Nielsen's top-ten list for original streaming content, and when the second season was released, it also held a place on that chart across several weeks. Both seasons of Outer Range remain available for viewing through Prime Video.
