JD Vance and Abdul El-Sayed Exchange Sharp Words Over TikTok Video Targeting Michigan Senate Candidate's Beard

Vice President JD Vance posted a TikTok video mocking Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed's beard, prompting El-Sayed to respond with a policy-focused statement. The back-and-forth escalated into personal territory involving references to family, with Vance telling El-Sayed to keep his wife's name out of the discussion. El-Sayed will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in Michigan's November Senate election.

On Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance shared a TikTok video recorded from a police vehicle in which he made remarks about Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed's facial hair, suggesting the state had prohibited uneven beards and calling on "patriots" to accompany him. The video juxtaposed footage of Vance with KRS-One's hip-hop track "Sound of da Police," and also featured comments he had made about beards at a defense contractor facility in Maine the month prior, together with a statement concerning the arrest of Abdul El-Sayed. At a Michigan rally the month prior, he addressed maintenance manager Jamie Beers with a joking comment about admiring well-groomed men, then turned to El-Sayed, taking issue with his policy positions. Vance also urged Republican nominees in safer districts to frame their campaigns around the Democratic candidate, telling journalists at the Capitol that the opponent offered plenty of material to work with across the country. In an X post, El-Sayed, a Democrat from Michigan, posed a question about whether Vance would take his wife Usha, who is of Indian descent, on a similar journey back through time to visit his grandfather.
