Formal accusations against Chaudhari include deliberately providing inaccurate information during a voting process and falsely asserting citizenship status as part of an attempt to register or cast a ballot. Upon conviction on any single count, the Department of Homeland Security noted, he would be subject to a prison term of up to five years per charge. The indictment states that Chaudhari put his name to a voter signature certificate on November 5, 2024, a step Minnesota law requires of anyone casting a ballot in the general election. Under the terms of the form, he was required to attest — either by oath or affirmation — that US citizenship applied to him. Charges filed against him allege he lacked US citizenship yet submitted a false declaration in order to cast a ballot, while a Homeland Security Investigations agent, Travis Pickard, noted that the right to vote is reserved for citizens and that the agency holds both the mandate and the investigative capacity to pursue cases of this kind.
