India Raises Financial Support for National Sports Federations to Rs 50 Crore for International Events

India's Sports Ministry has unveiled revised operational guidelines for the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations, raising the financial support ceiling for hosting international events from Rs 2 crore to Rs 50 crore. The updated scheme also includes up to Rs 50 crore for the National Games and is aligned with India's 2036 Olympic bid and the 2039 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. Funding covers sports equipment, timing and scoring services, technical officials' remuneration, and technical event management.

Under revised operational guidelines released by the Sports Ministry on Friday, each National Sports Federation hosting an international event may draw funding of as much as Rs 50 crore through the updated Scheme of Assistance to NSFs. Under the previous arrangement, national sports federations could receive hosting grants of as much as Rs two crore for organising international competitions on home soil. Revised guidelines from the Ministry, according to the statement, are intended to support hosting ambitions tied to Ahmedabad — both the 2036 Olympic bid and the 2039 Commonwealth Games — as part of a broader sporting framework for India. Up to Rs 50 crore in funding can be drawn by NSFs toward the costs of staging an international event, with the precise allocation tied to factors such as the event's scale, the number of countries sending delegations, and the total count of athletes taking part. According to a ministry statement, a dedicated Committee under the Secretary (Sports) will carry out the evaluation of NSF proposals. Under the updated scheme, funding of up to Rs 50 crore has been earmarked to support the hosting of National Games. Allocated across sports equipment, technical officials' pay, Timing, Scoring and Result (TSR) services, and the conduct of technical operations, the money would be distributed among those four areas.
