India Delivers Right of Reply at UN, Addresses Pakistan's Statements on Jammu and Kashmir

India delivered a Right of Reply at the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee in response to Pakistan's statement on Decolonization. Member of Parliament Mahima Kumari Mewar reaffirmed Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India, raised concerns about alleged human rights violations in Pakistani-occupied territories, and called on Pakistan to refrain from raising the issue at UN forums. A 15-member Indian parliamentary delegation was in New York for a UN familiarisation trip.

When Pakistan addressed the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly under the Decolonization agenda item, India took the floor to deliver a Right of Reply. The Special Committee on Political and Decolonization matters heard from Member of Parliament Mahima Kumari Mewar, who told delegates that Pakistan had repeatedly used the forum to advance what she described as inaccurate claims regarding the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In India's Right of Reply address at the forum, Mewar put forward the position that nations with documented histories of military governance, contested electoral processes, the detention of elected officials, religious extremist activity, and the use of non-state armed groups as instruments of foreign policy ought to exercise restraint before offering commentary from that platform, adding that Jammu and Kashmir forms a permanent and inseparable part of India's territory. India urged Pakistan to halt what it described as ongoing human rights abuses in territories whose status remains disputed, where residents have staged protests against the presence of Pakistani forces, restrictions on civil life, and the extraction of local resources. Mewar alleged that over the preceding months, armed forces and affiliated groups had been responsible for the deaths of numerous civilians who had taken to the streets seeking basic rights and improved living conditions. Among the 15 lawmakers who travelled to the United Nations earlier that week on a familiarisation visit, Mewar held a place in the delegation. Parliamentarians attending the UN engagement carried out a broad programme of meetings and activities, and an evening reception at India's Consulate General in New York brought them together with members of the Indian diaspora community.
