Squads covering both the ODI and Test formats have been named by India ahead of their tour to New Zealand, with the selectors making adjustments across each side. Squad selections for the upcoming matches were released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday.
A full itinerary of five T20 internationals, five one-day internationals, and two Tests awaits India and New Zealand, with the batting order of fixtures beginning in the shortest format — whose squad has already been announced.
Captaincy for the opening three ODIs falls to Shubman Gill, with Shreyas Iyer stepping into the role for the remaining two fixtures. Captaincy for the first three matches — running from 4 to 15 November — falls to Gill, with Iyer taking over for the two remaining ODIs once Gill turns his attention toward Test preparations.
Three players who appeared in the previous ODI selection against the West Indies — Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Dhruv Jurel — have been left out of the latest squad. Prasidh Krishna, a pace bowler, has been added to the squad pending a clearance on his fitness.
Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra, yet to feature at international level, has been handed his first national squad berth, stepping into the slot vacated by KL Rahul for the remaining two matches in the ODI series. Alongside Ishan Kishan, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have kept their spots in the squad.
Four bowlers — Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna — have been named to India's Test squad, giving the pace attack considerable depth across its seam options. Kamboj has also earned a place in the squad's announced line-up.
Leadership of the Test side will rest with Gill, while the vice-captaincy role goes to KL Rahul. Four batters — Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, and Nitish Kumar Reddy — make up the group assembled for the batting unit.
Both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are available to fill the wicketkeeper's role behind the stumps. Three players — Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav — bring a combination of spin-bowling depth and all-round capability into the touring party.
Three players who featured in the previous Test squad — Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan — were not retained when the updated selection was announced. The two-match Test portion of the tour is scheduled to begin on November 19, following the conclusion of the ODI fixtures.
Roster decisions point to a broader approach of rotating personnel between formats, with an eye on keeping players fresh across the contrasting physical demands that limited-overs and Test cricket each place on the body.
