India and Mongolia Review Defence Cooperation at 14th Joint Working Group Meeting in Ulaanbaatar

India and Mongolia held the 14th Joint Working Group meeting in Ulaanbaatar, where both sides reviewed bilateral defence cooperation, assessed the Cyber Security Training Centre established with Indian assistance at Mongolia's National Defence University, and discussed expanding collaboration. The delegations also acknowledged the successful completion of the 18th Nomadic Elephant joint military exercise held in Pithoragarh, India.

A visiting Indian defence delegation assessed the operations of the Cyber Security Training Centre at Ulaanbaatar's National Defence University — a facility built with Indian backing — while Mongolia conveyed its recognition of India's ongoing contributions to language instruction, cyber security, and personnel development within its armed forces, according to a Friday statement from the Defence Ministry. Heading the delegation to Ulaanbaatar for the 14th India-Mongolia Joint Working Group meeting on Friday, Joint Secretary Ishita Ganguli Tripathy of the Ministry of Defence led discussions that drew a formal acknowledgement from the Mongolian side, which noted in ministry-issued remarks that India's contributions to language training and cyber security programmes had been valued, with both parties pointing to capacity building and knowledge exchange as areas underpinning the bilateral Strategic Partnership. Tripathy also sat down with Mongolian Armed Forces Deputy Chief of the General Staff Major General Usukhbayar J, and the two sides took stock of how far defence cooperation had come, while the official readout noted that both delegations mapped out pathways to deepen engagement, reinforce bilateral defence ties, and set a forward-looking course for the India-Mongolia Strategic Partnership. Chaired jointly by Ganguli Tripathy and Mongolia's Deputy State Secretary of Defence, Brigadier General Gansukh E, the JWG session brought both delegations together to take stock of active defence cooperation programmes, weigh the momentum behind current initiatives, and map out pathways for deepening engagement across jointly prioritised areas. The two delegations also exchanged views on regional and international matters, while a ministry statement noted that the Nomadic Elephant exercise had concluded to mutual satisfaction, reflecting both nations' drive to deepen defence ties, and that India and Mongolia are bound by longstanding historical, cultural, and civilisational connections that underpin their present-day relationship. The statement described how commonalities in faith and cultural tradition had drawn the two countries into closer alignment. Marking the 18th iteration of Nomadic Elephant, the India-Mongolia joint military exercise, troops gathered at the Foreign Training Node in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, on 21 September 2026 to observe the formal commencement proceedings. Running September 21 through October 3, the exercise spanned nearly a fortnight of activity.
