Analyst forecasts point to HDFC Bank recording only modest profit expansion — somewhere in the low single digits — when its Q2 FY27 results are released. Quarterly results from the bank are due for release on Saturday, 17 October.
Projections from Kotak Institutional Equities place post-tax earnings at ₹19,510 crore for Q2 FY27, a figure that would represent a 4.7 per cent uplift against the same period a year earlier and a 2.4 per cent advance from the preceding quarter, while net interest income is forecast to reach ₹33,987.8 crore — up 7.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis and 1.4 per cent above the prior quarter's level. Kotak Institutional Equities also projects roughly 11 per cent growth against the same period a year ago, pointing to a broadly steady quarter ahead for the banking sector.
Profit after tax for the quarter is estimated at ₹19,607 crore by Axis Direct, reflecting a 5.2 per cent rise from the same period a year earlier and a 2.9 per cent uptick from the preceding quarter. Net interest income, for its part, is forecast by Axis Direct to climb by 8 per cent, reaching ₹34,091 crore.
Jefferies, the international brokerage, puts net interest income on course for a 5 per cent uptick to ₹33,000 crore, with net profit forecast to hold at its current level. Loan-loss allocations eased by 11 per cent on a year-over-year basis, settling at ₹18,600 crore. Projections place loan expansion at around 16 per cent and deposit growth at roughly 19 per cent, both landing within the upper range of the teens.
Deposit volumes are forecast to climb on the back of FCNR(B) inflows, though net interest margins face narrowing pressure. Deposit volumes climbed 19 per cent against the prior year, while the net interest margin outlook points to flat performance or a modest contraction of around 18 basis points over the same period, with the gross non-performing loan ratio anticipated to hold steady as new slippages are projected at roughly 1.2 per cent of the total loan book.
Loan expansion appears well-distributed across sectors, with inflows from FCNR(B) accounts providing a lift to overall deposit accumulation. Net interest margins are forecast to ease by around six basis points on a quarter-over-quarter basis, with cost discipline expected to keep operating expense ratios in check while robust fee income helps cushion the drag from softer treasury returns.
Forecasts point to year-on-year profit growth of around 20 per cent for private-sector lenders — a figure partly shaped by the softer earnings base recorded at institutions such as IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank — while state-owned banks are expected to post broadly flat or marginally lower results, with the recent disclosure from Bank of Baroda weighing on that outlook.
Axis Direct indicated that asset-quality pressures and funding expenses are both expected to hold at current levels, while flagging margin trajectory and management commentary around deposit growth as areas warranting close attention. The analysis flagged three areas for near-term attention: how net interest margins are trending, the effect of FCNR deposit flows, and whether the incoming leadership team can deliver on its operational commitments.
