Google I/O 2025, a significant event in the technology calendar, commenced with its annual keynote presentation. Various updates across Google’s product range were shared, focusing primarily on advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
AI Developments and Features
A prominent announcement was the introduction of AI Mode, a new chatbot feature in Google Search for users in the United States. This feature is designed to manage complex queries, such as comparing fitness trackers or finding affordable event tickets. AI Mode will also generate custom charts and graphics based on user inquiries and handle follow-up questions. Powered by the Gemini 2.5 model, this feature will initially be available to Labs users before a broader rollout.
AI Mode also enhances shopping experiences, allowing users to upload a photo to visualize clothing on a virtual model. Additionally, it will notify users when desired items are on sale and can complete purchases if desired.
Universal AI Assistant and Gemini Updates
Google provided further insights into Project Astra, a universal AI assistant. A demonstration showed Astra assisting with tasks such as repairing a mountain bike by accessing emails, researching online, and contacting local shops. The aim is to develop Gemini into a comprehensive AI assistant for daily tasks.
Gemini 2.5 introduces improved functionality, security, transparency, and cost efficiency. It includes a new reasoning mode, Deep Think, capable of transforming photo grids into 3D spheres with narration. The text-to-speech feature offers on-the-fly language changes. Personalized smart replies in Gmail will align with individual writing styles, requiring user permission to access personal data. Real-time translation in Google Meet will initially support Spanish to English, with plans to expand to other languages.
Android XR and Other Technological Advancements

Xreal's Project Aura smart glasses represent the second Android XR device. Google is also collaborating with Samsung on an Android XR headset, expected later this year.
Chrome's password manager will soon automatically change compromised passwords in data breaches, pending developer support. The browser will integrate Gemini to assist with open tabs. Beam, formerly Project Starline, is a 3D video conferencing technology now available to enterprise customers.
