Goa Police Detain Protesters at Planned Demonstration Against Chief Election Commissioner

Goa police detained multiple demonstrators, including CJP leader Amreen Shaikh and blocked former Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Ferdin Rebello, during a planned Cockroach Janta Party demonstration at Azad Maidan against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The CJP and opposition parties have been seeking Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.

Goa police intervened on Sunday to prevent a planned demonstration by Cockroach Janta Party members from getting underway, detaining several participants before the gathering against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar could begin. Rebello, a jurist who once held the chief justice's post at the Allahabad High Court, was among the group turned back at the entrance, as were the legal practitioners Claud and Norma Alvares and the activists Swapnesh Sherlekar and Govind Shirodkar. Rebello, the leader of the 'Enough Is Enough' movement in Goa, put forward questions about the authorities' decision, seeking clarification on which legal provision prevents citizens from entering Azad Maidan — a public ground housing a martyrs' memorial — with a news agency reporting him as having drawn a parallel between the freedom fighters who once worked toward Goa's liberation and what he characterised as the present effort to hold the Election Commission accountable for its exercise of power.
