Collins presents himself as a conservative open to working across party lines without abandoning core beliefs, but primary opponents argue that an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into possible mishandling of official resources could weaken his chances in a general election matchup with Ossoff. Collins indicated she ran on putting national interests first, recognizes the value of such policies, and strongly supports the present course, adding that whoever emerges from the June runoff will confront a tough race against Ossoff, the only Democratic senator up for re-election in a state Trump won in 2024. During his campaign, Ossoff has pointed to what he characterizes as pervasive ethical challenges in Washington and the previous administration, though the state voted for Trump by a small margin in 2024. Certain Republicans acknowledge the race presents difficulties, with one former county party official who backed Dooley in the primary pointing to Ossoff's track record on constituent matters and noting that parties holding the White House historically face headwinds in midterm elections, while Republicans see opportunities in Georgia following Trump's state victory in 2024. Democrats are also vying for the Senate position in Michigan, a state Trump carried, where Democratic Senator Gary Peters has announced his retirement.
