Sweeney, 29, had launched an advertising partnership with Novig the previous week, featuring her unclothed in the campaign with sports equipment used as coverage, a collaboration that prompted debate about the commercialisation of female athletes' bodies. Reactions among Instagram users varied, with one person contending that Sweeney's appearance represented a step backwards for women, an athlete sharing a competition photograph accompanied by a caption describing it as a true depiction of women in sport, and a further athlete expressing the view that there is considerably more to women in sport than how they look.
