For the first time in over ten years, Edmonton's Elks franchise will serve as the venue for the CFL's West division championship game. Four touchdowns came from Cody Fajardo on Friday night — two on the ground, two through the air — as Edmonton built a lead over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and held on for a 35-27 victory.
The ten-year stretch without a West final appearance ended for Edmonton when the Elks wrapped up the home clincher. Head coach Mark Kilam expressed satisfaction in how his players had performed, while quarterback Fajardo — whose 12 completions from 17 attempts accounted for 120 passing yards as part of a 13-4 campaign — told reporters afterward that the group viewed the result as the third of five stages in a broader plan, with that particular box now checked.
The home crowd proved to be a decisive factor in securing a place in the Western Conference final. Winnipeg head coach Mike O'Shea told reporters the performance fell short of what was needed, pointing to five or six key plays that went against his side. The Blue Bombers, at 8-9, missed out on clinching a playoff position but retain a path to the post-season if Calgary falls to B.C. on Saturday.
Winnipeg's starting quarterback, Zach Collaros, connected on 28 of 33 pass attempts for 331 yards, throwing for two touchdowns alongside two interceptions. Collaros noted afterward that protecting possession and avoiding turnovers — particularly interceptions during a drive with a chance to take the lead — were areas where a team could not afford lapses, adding that the responsibility for those falls with the individual in question.
"Errors at that scale tend to cost you," Collaros said. After a missed field goal to open their drive, the Blue Bombers regrouped with possession still early in the first quarter, moving the ball down the field before Collaros connected with Nic Demski on a 13-yard scoring pass to close out the possession.
A boot from Vincent Blanchard split the uprights on an 18-yard attempt, putting three points on the board for the Elks before the quarter ended. Logan Jr. intercepted a Collaros pass near the Winnipeg nine-yard line, and Fajardo turned the turnover into points by finding Powell, who drove through contact to reach the end zone.
Across three consecutive outings prior to the game, Fajardo had failed to throw a touchdown pass. On the following possession, Collaros connected with Ontaria Wilson on a 32-yard touchdown pass, following the earlier interception. Backup quarterback Bryce Perkins pushed through from a yard out to extend Winnipeg's lead with another touchdown.
A 65-yard return by Montrell Washington on the kickoff set up a third-down play with two seconds left before halftime. Fajardo connected with Austin Mack on a four-yard touchdown pass that brought Edmonton within four points of Winnipeg, 21-17, at the break.
Edmonton maintained pressure into the second half as Fajardo punched in a one-yard touchdown to cap a lengthy drive. A 23-yard field goal from Sergio Castillo drew the Bombers to within a point, though his follow-up attempt from 55 yards rattled off the uprights. A 52-yard field goal from Blanchard then put points on the board for the Elks.
A Fajardo two-yard plunge pushed the Edmonton lead out to 35-24, with the clock showing just 1:39 left to play. With the clock winding down, a 53-yard attempt by Castillo split the uprights.
Edmonton has now won three consecutive games over Winnipeg, with the two earlier meetings this season ending 23-18 and 22-18 in the Elks' favour. The result marked the first time since before 1979 that Edmonton had swept a three-game series against Winnipeg.
The reception by Demski drew him level with Kenny Lawler on the active-player list for receiving touchdowns, leaving both men at 47 scores apiece across their respective careers. The Blue Bombers wrap up their regular-season schedule on the road next Friday, heading west to take on B.C.'s Lions. A road trip to Saskatchewan closes out Edmonton's regular-season schedule, with the Roughriders serving as the opposition next Saturday.
