Hurts, who lines up as the Eagles' starting quarterback, was added to injured reserve on Saturday after a blood clot was found in his calf. A blood clot detected during an ultrasound in London the prior Saturday will keep Hurts off the field in Week 6, the Eagles announced Thursday.
Placed on injured reserve, Hurts — who is 28 years old — faces a stretch of no fewer than four games on the sideline. Hurts' earliest possible return to the field is pegged at Week 11, a home matchup against the Steelers that falls right after Philadelphia's bye. Four upcoming fixtures — against the Panthers, Cowboys, Commanders, and Giants — are expected to fall within his absence.
Imaging carried out Wednesday evening showed the superficial blood clot had shifted position, despite the medical staff having cleared Hurts to take the field. A statement put out by the Eagles on Thursday noted that the organisation had been in touch with the league office over the matter. The team indicated that Hurts' treatment plan would be evaluated on an ongoing basis, adding that his well-being remains the foremost concern. The player's physical condition stands as the foremost consideration for the Eagles organisation.
His numbers through five games this season show 933 passing yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 57.8% completion rate across a 2-3 team record.
Tanner McKee, stepping in as the reserve quarterback, is lined up to take the field for Philadelphia against Carolina on Sunday in what would be his third appearance as a starter. Rounding out the quarterback depth chart are Cole Payton, a rookie, and Joe Milton, who came aboard after being picked up from the Cowboys' practice squad.
Alongside placing Hurts on injured reserve that Saturday, the team processed a handful of additional personnel adjustments. Jaydon Blue was promoted from the practice squad to a permanent spot on the 53-man roster, while Keyshawn James-Newby and Cole Wisniewski received standard game-week elevations ahead of the Panthers matchup. Alongside Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele, Blue rounds out the backfield options available on the 53-man roster, with all three carrying a clean bill of health.
Chosen in the seventh round of April's draft, James-Newby and Wisniewski each entered the league from that same selection tier.
Four players — Landon Dickerson, Eli Stowers, Grant Calcaterra, and Jakorian Bennett — remain on injured reserve after the Eagles passed on any roster activations, extending each player's absence into at least another week. Practice windows for all four were made available during the course of that week.
