Police enforcement activity in Delhi, carried out before the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — referred to in the input as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) — could hold its planned demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, extended well beyond the Jantar Mantar area. On Saturday, Yashaswinee Raje Singh — whose father, Vikram Singh, previously held a BJP MLA seat in Uttar Pradesh — was taken into custody by authorities at a park near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, where she had been seated. She later described the circumstances as being held for nothing more than occupying a public bench.
In a post shared on X that Saturday, Singh indicated he was being detained at Keshav Puram police station. Two factors shaped the attention her arrest drew: one rooted in lineage, the other in geography. The CJP demonstration had been organised at Jantar Mantar, yet Singh was detained at a location outside the authorised gathering point.
The approach described by Delhi Police as preventive policing — applied across the capital and used to determine the legal threshold for detaining people believed to be on their way to a protest — forms the broader context in which her arrest took place.
In a post published on X afterward, she reported that the group left Keshav Puram police station at 5:30 pm. She also stated that during the detention she had witnessed officers providing cover to a plainclothes individual who, over the course of several hours, had recorded detainees without their consent, and who, while on the premises, had struck a female detainee.
Among those present, some directed chants of "Delhi police murdabad" at officers, while the deployment of personnel for the operation drew notice for its scale. A force of more than 40,000 personnel drawn from Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Forces took up positions across the city, with barricades and spike strips laid down at multiple points to head off any recurrence of the gatherings seen previously.
Three justifications were put forward by the police — venue capacity at Jantar Mantar, the handling of crowds, and the protection of public safety — to account for the restrictions in place.
Although Singh's father served as a BJP legislator in Uttar Pradesh, she had at an earlier point lent her backing to student protests led by CJP over paper leaks that were under investigation. Her name appeared on the arrest roster when that same organisation clashed with authorities in its most recent episode of unrest.
