Cristiano Ronaldo Departs Portugal Training Camp Amid Falling Out With Coach Jorge Jesus

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's national team training camp in Copenhagen ahead of a UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the squad. The dispute centers on Ronaldo being an unused substitute during Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway. Jesus addressed the situation at a press conference, standing by his decisions while acknowledging a minor tactical error. Ronaldo has not announced retirement but has withheld his reasons, promising to share them with the Portuguese public at a later date.

Ronaldo started the UEFA Nations League clash against Wales — the opening fixture under coach Jesus — had a goal disallowed before being substituted in the 67th minute of a 1-0 win, with João Félix scoring the only goal. Nyland's handling error presented Gonçalo Ramos with the opportunity to score the winning goal. Nobody in football — or anywhere else — could dispute that. The administration that held power differed from those that preceded it. "Never, zero." Jesus explained that Ronaldo's standing within football shapes how a manager should handle decisions around him, though only in the lead-up to a game. "A player's standing, accumulated over the years, gives a manager reason to think carefully about choices before the match kicks off," he said. "Once the game is under way, every player is treated equally. Jesus stated that he holds his players in high regard, while also recognising that those who spend 20 to 30 minutes warming up without receiving any playing time are unlikely to be content with that situation. "I should have delayed his warm-up by around 15 minutes," he said, noting that although Ronaldo had taken issue with him over the matter, he viewed it as having been settled. Playing for Portugal gives Ronaldo access to top-tier European opposition at a competitive level that his club side, Al Nassr, does not reach. Goncalo Ramos scored three goals as Portugal defeated Switzerland 6-1 in the 2022 World Cup round of 16, a match in which manager Fernando Santos had chosen to leave Ronaldo out of the starting lineup.
