Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Plans Legal Challenge After JNU Dismissal Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Congress MP Bimol Akoijam, dismissed from JNU over sexual harassment allegations, announced plans to legally challenge the dismissal within one to two days. After appearing before Delhi Police investigators, he returned to Manipur and called for calm among residents. At least 11 female students filed complaints against him in May, and he has been booked under multiple BNS sections. Akoijam has denied all charges and pledged cooperation with the investigation.

On Friday, Akoijam — a Congress MP facing sexual harassment allegations that led to his removal from Jawaharlal Nehru University — disclosed to reporters that his lawyers were assembling a judicial challenge to that decision, with the filing expected within the next day or two. Returning to Imphal the day after his appearance before investigators at Delhi's Vasant Kunj North Police Station, Akoijam addressed residents throughout Manipur, calling on them to maintain calm and avoid any escalation. Akoijam told investigators he would cooperate with their inquiry, and separately urged reporters to focus on a set of issues he laid out: the plight of people forced from their homes, the deterioration of law and order across the state, contested buffer-zone boundaries, and what he described as a growing tolerance for conditions that fall well outside any reasonable standard — with tens of thousands still living in relief camps as evidence of how far things stand from resolution.
