Brazil's Lula Rallies Supporters Ahead of Sunday Presidential Election

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a symbolic victory march in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of Sunday's presidential election, retracing a route through locations tied to Brazil's democratic history. Lula stated he entered the race for a fourth term to prevent his right-wing rival's family from returning to power. Pre-election polls show a narrow lead for the incumbent president over Flávio Bolsonaro, son of jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters ahead of Sunday's vote, Lula da Silva characterised himself as the only force standing between his political opponents and a path back to power. The night before the ballot, the 80-year-old put forward a rationale for seeking a fourth term rooted in his belief that his presence on the ticket was the only barrier preventing the political dynasty linked to rival Flávio Bolsonaro from returning to power — a scenario he characterised, in his own words, as one that would have been straightforward for those he labelled as fascists had he chosen to stand aside. On a podcast with a broad listenership, Lula positioned himself as the principal barrier protecting the existing political order from what he described as a slide toward disorder; within hours, he was in Rio de Janeiro at the head of a procession he presented as an affirmation of democratic values — a route that passed through two downtown sites carrying historical associations with opposition to the military administration that governed from 1964 to 1985 — where he told those assembled that the matter at hand concerned not any one person's fate but the health of democratic institutions more broadly. The site had already carved out a place in the country's political memory: back in 1984, somewhere upward of a million people — Lula counted among them — gathered there to demand the return of direct presidential elections. Speaking to the crowd at that rally — an event he attended as a politician in his thirties — Lula argued that democratic governance had to be actively defended or it would be lost, after which the assembled group proceeded roughly a mile southward along the route from Candelária to Cinelândia, a public square carrying the memory of a mass pro-democracy mobilisation in 1968 referred to as the March of the Hundred Thousand; at that location he further maintained that no outside power would be permitted to intervene in Brazilian affairs, a statement that observers interpreted as directed at allegations that Trump had worked to sway votes toward Bolsonaro. Survey figures give the sitting president a slim lead heading into the vote, while Flávio Bolsonaro — whose father, Jair Bolsonaro, was sentenced to 27 years in prison after being found guilty in connection with a plot to unseat the government, a case that took shape in the wake of Lula's victory over the elder Bolsonaro in the 2022 presidential contest — runs as a competing candidate.
